Domaine Henri Germain et Fils

Henri Germain founded the estate in the early 80s, before passing the reins to his son Jean-Francois, who is now joined by his daughter Lucie.

Whilst only eight hectares, the family has a selection of excellently located vineyards across Meursault, Beaune and Chassagne-Montrachet, part in thanks to family connections, such as with the Pillot and Jobard family. This was, until fairly recently, a reasonably unknown Domaine but now demand hugely outstrips supply for these exceptionally artisan wines.

These wines are classic and concentrated examples of what Chardonnay can achieve in the finest terroirs - and, these, in our opinion, are some of the clearest examples of what Meursault can achieve. They farm the vineyards organically, although they are not certified. Once in the tiny, freezing cellar (which is a delight to taste in), these wines go into barrels for both malolactic and alcoholic fermentation. New wood is used sparingly, only being introduced when old barrels have to be replaced. The fermentations are long and slow and the resulting wines go through a long elevage, spending two winters in barrel. They are incredibly stable and authentic wines that are crystalline and powerful.
